Nestled high above, in the San Jacinto Hills, 200 feet above the valley floor, the private, gated community of Southridge is comprised of only 19 homes. Located only a few miles from downtown Palm Springs, and yet a world apart, Southridge offers a world-class house, world-class neighbors and world-class views. Neighboring homes include the mid-century masterpiece that noted architect, John Lautner built for the late designer Arthur Elrod, which was featured in the movie "Diamonds Are Forever" and the 30,000 square foot "Martian Spaceship" also created by Lautner, for Bob and Delores Hope in 1974.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, William F. Cody moved to Los Angeles in the 1920's and graduated from USC in 1942. He moved to Palm Springs in 1945, his first job renovating the cottages at the Desert Inn.

His love of the desert led Cody to explore in his buildings various combinations of flat roofs, adobe walls, tile floors, and teak, all designed to combat the desert heat.

Cody's most famous projects were country clubs, designing or renovating the Thunderbird, Tamarisk, and Eldorado, three of the oldest and most exclusive clubs in the desert. He also created the Palm Springs Spa (now the Spa Casino), the Palm Springs Library, and St. Theresa's Church. But, he received awards from the American Institute of Architects for two private homes, the Robert Cannon House and the J.B. Shamel House. ____

Cody first met famed designer Arthur Elrod in the late 50's - they would collaborate on a number of desert projects over the next 15 years. Cody died in 1988, leaving behind a legacy of Mid-Century Modern structures in Palm Springs that are as admired today as when they were built 50 years ago.

Built in 1964 by architect William F. Cody, the 'third home on the hill' was featured in a 1967 issue of Architectural Digest as a prime example of contemporary desert architecture.

Cody's clean, simple lines and open, airy spaces are complemented by the interior design of Arthur Elrod and Harold Broderick. Every room in the 4,939 square foot home features a stunning view, each different than the last, of the valley to the North or the mountains to the South, providing breath-taking sunrises and sunsets.

With only two owners, the home retains all of Cody's mid-century vision, but has been pain-stakingly modernized and upgraded under the supervision of noted local modern expert George Machado. Every piece of furniture and artwork in the home is original to the era, or in keeping with the sleek, clean, colorful lines of mid-century sensibility.

After passing through the burnished aluminum double doors into the low-ceilinged tiled entryway, complete with 20 foot fountain, you climb  five steps and enter the 13-foot high grand foyer. Sunlight gleams, through the three skylights down onto the marbled floor and built-in reflecting pool.

To the left, the huge living room/office/entertainment area features a sunken wet bar and built-in cabinetry for the entertainment system, which is wired throughout the house. One end of the living room is dominated by the gracious fireplace, which is surrounded by stunning bookmatched Italian walnut travertine.

Throw open the 5 foot wide floor-to-ceiling glass doors which separate the living room from the massive patio and pool area, which looks down on the valley below, and you have a home perfect for entertaining, indoors and out, day and night, in all seasons. The pool area is paved with terrazzo and mosaic tile, and is planted with orange trees and palms.

To the right of the foyer, the dining area features a dining table, when expanded, can seat 16 for elegant dinner parties. Should your dinner guests want to be entertained, in an alcove off of the dining room sits a white baby grand piano once owned by actress Joan Collins.
